Josh Thomas is an educator and homesteader dedicated to helping families revive practical, traditional skills in a modern learning world. He has over 20 years of experience in homesteading, homeschooling, and family-centered skill development, and has taught thousands of parents and students through the School of Traditional Skills' online curriculum and workshops.
Through his work, Josh focuses on giving families practical, confidence-building instruction that introduces students to skills like animal husbandry, home-scale food production and preservation, home economics, and foundational shop skills. His teaching blends step-by-step demonstrations with real-life application so students gain competence, capability, and a sense of meaningful connection to their work — no farm, acreage, or prior experience required.
Josh, along with his team, develops classes, electives, and family resources specifically designed for homeschool and private-school parents who want their children to learn traditional skills alongside core academics. He believes these skills cultivate problem-solving, creativity, resilience, and hands-on confidence — qualities that serve students for life.
When not teaching, writing, or filming workshops, Josh lives with his wife Carolyn and their children on their 40-acre homestead in the mountains of North Idaho, where they garden, raise animals, and continue testing and refining the traditional methods they teach to families around the world.
