This workshop is designed for parents who want to enhance their teaching of algebraic concepts to students in grades 6-12 using algebra tiles. Algebra tiles are powerful, hands-on manipulatives that make abstract ideas more concrete, providing a visual and tactile way to explore mathematical operations and concepts. Participants will: • Learn the basics of algebra tiles, including the different types of tiles and how they represent variables and constants. • Learn how to use algebra tiles for basic integer operations including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing • Explore how to use algebra tiles to model and solve linear equations, simplify expressions, factor polynomials, and perform operations such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication of algebraic expressions. • Be provided multiple resources for using algebra tiles both free and paid including a handout to create your own, as well as the information to download a free virtual set of algebra tiles and where you can purchase a 3-d plastic set of algebra tiles By the end of the workshop, parents will have the confidence and tools to integrate algebra tiles into their math curriculum, making concepts more accessible and enjoyable for all students. |
