The Classical and Christian tradition of education often regards education as the cultivation of virtue. Four of the chief virtues are prudence, justice, courage, and temperance, which are also called cardinal virtues (from the Latin cardo, hinge). For ancient Christians like Augustine, these virtues are harmonized and governed by the love of Jesus Christ who alone can transform the virtue into holiness and self-giving love. In this seminar, we will trace the history of the virtue tradition in education and the ways we can practically cultivate the cardinal virtues through the study of history, literature, and Scripture.
