From the True to the Good: The Role of Logic in Human Flourishing
Classical education has long held that the pursuit of the Good Life requires more than moral aspiration—it requires trained judgment. In this session, we will explore how the study of logic in the middle-grade years (7th–10th) forms the habits of mind necessary for discerning truth, resisting error, and choosing what is genuinely good. Logic is often misunderstood as a merely technical or academic subject, but in the classical tradition it is a moral art, shaping students to love what is true so they may pursue lives ordered toward the good. Drawing from classical sources, contemporary reflections on flourishing, and practical experience teaching logic, this session will show how logic strengthens prudence, cultivates intellectual virtue, and supports a vision of human flourishing rooted in the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. Participants will leave with a renewed understanding of logic’s formative power and practical ways to connect logic instruction to the moral aims of classical education.
