| This session explores the broader scope of engineering education beyond just programming robots and AI tools, emphasizing the overlooked critical thinking and artistic creativity skills required, like debugging failures and elegant system design architecture. While coding and AI can be fun and educational tools in homeschooling, we consider whether they serve as “vanilla ice cream" rather than the "career nutrition" needed for long-term success in a rapidly evolving tech-world. Drawing from real-world engineering consulting in aerospace (e.g., aircraft disasters), automotive (reliability), consumer (e-waste) and medical devices (insulin pump failures), this workshop highlights that building a single robot as a kid is enjoyable, but designing millions of reliable, safe robots that operate for decades is the true essence of engineering. |
