The motivation that inspired a team of Christian professional astronomers to develop this textbook was to equip and prepare Christian students for the challenges they will face at secular universities. Statistics are clear in showing that many Christians lose their faith during their college years and certainly confusion about science and faith play an important role in this outcome. This unique curriculum was born out of a desire to make a difference in changing these statistics and to equip Christian students to defend their faith with sound reasoning in a secular environment. This one-year science curriculum consists of two parts: (1) Introduction to the science and faith dialogue and (2) Astronomy as a discipline including many interviews with top level professional Christian astronomers to engage and inspire students; (more information at www.GlimpseofHisSplendor.com). In this workshop we plan to cover topics and a few exercises on the introduction to the science and faith dialogue, which includes: • science and worldviews – how to discern between worldviews and scientific information • definitions of the realm of science and faith, the applicability and limitations of the scientific method, the search for truth from both a scientific and religious standpoint; • four views on the relationship between science and faith (conflict, independence, dialogue and integration) • Exposing the Conflicts – scientists, Christians and human attitudes • tips and tools for making sound arguments. The workshop will also briefly discuss fingerprints of God in the universe. It will present evidence for a beginning and introduce the fine tuning in the laws of physics, which is widely regarded as the most persuasive current argument for the existence of a Super Intelligence, a Designer for this universe. |
