Rhett Smith grew up as the oldest of ten children and was home educated from second grade through high school graduation. He has a high school diploma from a homeschool accreditation agency. He was a National Merit Scholar and earned a full scholarship to the University of Toledo, where he earned a B.S. degree in chemistry. He then earned his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University. He did his postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he studied brain chemistry and won the National Research Service award in 2004. In 2006 Dr. Smith began his current role as a professor of chemistry at Clemson University. He has developed curricula for all ages in science and math for the last 18 years. Dr. Smith has experience with an autistic child, he leads the Neuroscience group, and in 2014 published the book “Becoming an Expert Parent: Your Concise Guide to ADHD and Related Conditions.”
