About Andrew Peterson

For more than twenty years now, Andrew Peterson (a homeschooling dad) has been about the business of quietly changing lives in four-minute increments. In the city of Nashville—where music is an industry in the same way that fast food, generic greeting cards, and bumper stickers are industries—Peterson has forged his own path, refusing the artistic compromises that so often come with chasing album sales and radio singles and instead has created a long line of songs that ache with sorrow, joy, and integrity, and that are, at the end of the day, part of a real, ongoing, human conversation.

Andrew is also the award-winning author of The Wingfeather Saga, a four-book fantasy adventure series for young people, described as The Princess Bride meets The Lord of the Rings. The books are currently being produced as an animated film, which is terribly, wonderfully, indubitably exciting.

Schedule

Andrew Peterson will be performing in concert on Friday evening at the Midwest Homeschool Convention. Don’t miss this special concert!

Daniel Huerta is the vice president of the Parenting and Youth department at Focus on the Family. In this role, he oversees Focus’ initiatives that equip parents to disciple and mentor the next generation, so that they can thrive in Christ.

Huerta is a bilingual licensed clinical social worker. For many years, he has provided families with practical parenting advice. He specializes as a counselor and spokesperson in the treatment of disruptive behavior disorders, conflict resolution, self-esteem issues, and anxiety and depression in adolescents, children, and their families. He can also discuss how to talk with kids about trauma and healthy sexuality.

Born in Mexico City, Huerta also understands firsthand how intercultural differences affect relationships and can help families learn how to navigate challenges in this area well.

Huerta’s heart for counseling took root in college when he taught youth sports with a special needs individual at a YMCA. Despite severe disabilities, the young man’s joy and skills inspired Huerta to help people become the best they can be and live the best they can.

After the shooting tragedies in Aurora, CO, and Newtown, CT, Huerta took on dozens of radio and TV interviews, giving advice to parents on how to talk through the tragedies with their kids and teens. He’s also been a guest on the “Focus on the Family Daily Broadcast,” “Focus on the Family Weekend,” and “Focus on the Family Minute” radio features.

Before joining Focus on the Family in 2004, Huerta worked as a social worker for the Harrison School District in Colorado Springs. He also supervised a mentoring program for at-risk youth and served as an adjunct faculty member at Pikes Peak Community College.

Huerta was a contributing author for The First Five Years of Marriage, The Smart Groom’s Answer Guide to the First Year of Marriage, and The Savvy Bride’s Answer Guide to the First Year of Marriage.

He maintains a private practice in Colorado Springs and served as a board member on the El Paso County Mental Health Association for almost four years. He is also a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist.

Gary Bates

Bio: Gary hails from Australia and has been speaking on the creation/evolution issue since 1990. In 2009 his family relocated to the US to head up the CMI office as its CEO. He is in much in demand for his popular lay talks on creation and, in particular, his specialists talk on the UFO phenomenon. Gary is one of few Christians who has tackled this popular cultural phenomenon, and his 2005 book, Alien Intrusion: UFOs and the Evolution Connection became an Amazon top-50 best seller within weeks of its release (the only Creationist book ever to achieve this feat). As a leading Christian authority in this area, Gary has travelled extensively around the world, speaking and conducting literally hundreds of interviews on radio, television and various media on the UFO subject and creation topics in general. His book was also made into a movie-length documentary called Alien Intrusion: Unmasking a Deception, which, in 2018, aired in many countries and in over 730 theaters in the US alone. Gary wrote, produced and directed this REMI award-winning movie. Gary also wrote and produced another award-winning documentary for CMI called Evolution’s Achilles’ Heels.

Gary, like many CMI staff, was once a convinced evolutionist, and is well equipped to understand both sides of the debate. He also has first-hand experience on how the Creation message has a dramatic impact on lives due to his own conversion experience and is passionate about communicating complex topics in a manner that all can understand.
